/20 March 2025Pioneering the Future of Cold Storage: The Innovative Technology Powering Constellation’s NetworkAt Constellation, we know that technological innovation is the key to unlocking a more efficient, sustainable, and resilient cold chain for our customers. The future of logistics isn’t just about keeping up with demand – it’s about working with our customers as partners to help them prepare for the future. We are continuously in the process of trialling and rolling out cutting-edge solutions across our pan-European cold storage network. From fully automated warehouses that maximise space and efficiency to AI-driven energy management systems that reduce costs and carbon footprints, Constellation is investing in technology that delivers real, tangible benefits for our customers and team members alike. By investing in technology across our network, we’re not only increasing our capacity and reliability but setting new benchmarks for sustainability and service excellence across the cold chain. In this article, we will explore some of the latest technology and trials from across our network, and their benefits for our customers and our team. Wolverhampton: Constellation’s Latest Fully Automated Cold Storage Facility One of our most exciting developments is the ongoing construction of our brand-new facility in Wolverhampton. While we already have fully automated sites within our network, including High Bay 1 and High Bay 2 which both use traditional automated cranes, this will be our newest facility featuring shuttle automation at its core from day one.At the heart of this facility is advanced shuttle technology. In comparison to traditional automation with stacker cranes, 4-way shuttles provide increased scalability and improved energy efficiency. The system builds, sequences, and dispatches loads as required, making operations faster, more precise, and less prone to delays. It’s the cold chain equivalent of replacing manual parcel delivery with an intelligent, self-navigating fleet of robots – it’s streamlining our processes, increasing reliability, and reducing downtime.Beyond efficiency, this technology enhances sustainability. Shuttle systems consume far less energy than traditional crane-based solutions, significantly lowering operational costs while reducing our carbon footprint and our clients’. If a technical issue arises, the system reroutes around it, reducing the risk of losing access to our clients’ stock often associated with traditional cranes. This investment is not just about innovation – it’s about improving our service for our customers and setting a new standard for the industry. Wolverhampton represents the first step in making this advanced system a replicable model across our network.Find out more about how we’re strengthening the cold chain in the UK and Ireland.AI-Driven Energy Management: Smarter, More Sustainable Cold StorageEnergy management is key to making our freezer warehouses more sustainable. To address this, we are deploying AI-powered smart controls to manage energy use dynamically. Currently in operation at sites in Denmark and Norway, this system intelligently adjusts cooling based on real-time supply and weather conditions.By integrating with market data, our cold storage facilities can increase energy consumption when renewable sources – such as wind power – are abundant, then scale back usage when energy is in shorter supply. This aligns with Constellation’s sustainability goals by ensuring our operations are as energy-efficient as possible. In the coming months, we plan to expand this system to additional sites across the Netherlands and the UK as part of a phased network-wide rollout. This innovation is a win-win for our customers and the planet, with greater efficiency, and a reduced carbon footprint, all while maintaining the highest standards of product safety.Automated Picking: Protecting People and Enhancing EfficiencyCold storage environments present challenges for employees. For every hour worked, staff must spend time in an ambient-temperature area to warm up – an unavoidable requirement that impacts both well-being and efficiency. Reducing human exposure to extreme cold is both a health and operational priority, which is why we are exploring automated picking solutions to support our workforce by handling the more physically demanding tasks, allowing staff to focus on higher-value work within cold storage facilities. This technology enables products to be handled automatically and processed with minimal human involvement. The benefits extend beyond efficiency: it improves workplace safety, reduces long-term health risks for employees, and ensures a smoother, faster service for customers.By allowing automation to handle the most physically demanding tasks, we’re empowering our workforce to focus on tasks that require greater skill and judgment, while simultaneously improving overall colleague engagement and operational performance. While still in the trial phase, we are actively testing solutions at key sites across our network as we look towards a future where people and technology work together to optimise performance.Acting on Data-Driven InsightsWith an already strong pan-European network of high-quality assets, Constellation is committed to leveraging our scale to deliver the best possible service to our customers. To achieve this, we are continuously integrating our systems, enhancing our data analytics and Power BI capabilities to optimise our cold chain operations for our customers. By consolidating real-time temperature monitoring, inventory, warehouse performance, and transportation data into Power BI dashboards, we gain instant insights that improve operational efficiency and customer visibility. This integration not only enhances our day-to-day operations but also strengthens our ability to respond to changes in real time.As we continue to strengthen our capabilities, predictive analytics will enable us to anticipate demand fluctuations, reduce waste, and optimise inventory management. This data-driven approach will also enhance route optimisation, minimising fuel consumption and delivery times, while ensuring product integrity. With customised reporting, we proactively address potential disruptions, enhance compliance tracking, and provide a more reliable, transparent cold storage and transportation solution. Our Commitment to SustainabilityTechnological innovation and energy efficiency are just one part of Constellation’s broader sustainability strategy. Most of our large facilities already incorporate solar panels, and we continue to explore ways to make our sites even more self-sufficient. Many locations also reuse excess heat, with our Danish facilities using heat pumps to supply district heating. We’re now looking at expanding this approach beyond Denmark, repurposing the waste heat from our cooling systems to benefit local communities.By reducing energy consumption, improving efficiency, and pioneering new ways of working, we are reinforcing our commitment to a more sustainable future – not just for our company, but for the entire cold storage industry. The Next Chapter in Cold Storage InnovationAt Constellation, technological innovation is never just about efficiency – it’s about setting new benchmarks for service, reliability, and sustainability. Every advancement we make – whether it’s automation at our upcoming Wolverhampton facility, AI-driven energy management, or the latest innovations in automated picking – is designed to strengthen our position and provide the highest quality service for our customers across Europe.By continually investing in smart solutions, we’re building a cold storage network that is agile, resilient, and forward-thinking. The future isn’t just about automating processes to make them less labour intensive – it’s about delivering smarter, more sustainable, and more effective solutions that benefit our customers, our team members, and the cold logistics wider industry.Get in touch todayPost navigationWhat’s Next for Cold Storage and Logistics in the Nordics? – Jan Nielsen, Nordics Managing DirectorScaling While Prioritising Customer Service: The Constellation Blueprint – Abhy Maharaj, CCO
