Sustainability - Constellation Cold Logistics

We proactively operate our business in a sustainable and responsible manner.

This includes protecting our environment, positively contributing to society, and ensuring good governance. Below we include several initiatives that are contributing to these goals.

We also consider sustainability as part of our investment decisions. Investments that are borderline on a purely financial basis will be considered if they contribute to our ESG goals and net zero ambitions.

We are committed towards reaching net zero emissions by 2050 in line with a 1.5 degree temperature increase limit scenario.

We have set ambitious science-aligned targets to achieve this: we are committed to reducing our absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 54.6% and our absolute Scope 3 emissions by 32.5% by 2033 from a 2023 base year.

Reducing Our Energy Consumption

We continue to make large investments to reduce our energy consumption, for instance optimising and modernising our refrigeration plant at sits in France and the Netherlands.

At our Val de Meuse site in France, we invested €500k to optimise our refrigeration plant.

This included implementation of frequency control and optimisation on evaporators, compressors, and other equipment, and installation of a new modern condenser. We achieved a substantial energy saving of 40%

We have also initiated an energy efficiency program across all of our sites

This will include continuing to invest into modernisation of our facilities and new technology, such as best-in-class insulation, energy-efficient doors, and LED lighting.

Careers 2

In 2024 we generated ~10.9GWh of energy from solar panels across our sites.

We are actively investing in our clean energy generation, including the addition of 1MWp solar panels as part of the construction of our new highbay in Mouscron, Belgium, and a recent investment of ~€4m to add around 5MWp of additional solar panels across the UK and Norway. We are embracing innovative solutions such as the repurposing of end-of-life railway sleepers to support a ground array in Norway. We are also exploring other clean energy sources.

Minimising Pollution and Waste

We report our waste generated on a quarterly basis and are taking steps across our sites to ensure that as much waste as possible is diverted from landfill.

Our vehicle fleet comprises modern and highly efficient trucks, 100% of which are Euro 6 compliant, meeting the highest emissions standards. Investments in electric trailer plugs in our yards ensure a reduction in emissions from diesel trailer refrigeration units. We also have invested in 25 hydraulic generators in the UK to power our diesel trailer refrigeration units.

Positively Contributing to Society

Cold stores, with low temperatures, high racking, and handling equipment movements, require strong safety oversight.

Whether working in our storage facilities or out on the road, the safety and welfare of our employees is paramount. Similarly, we strive to ensure a safe environment for customers and third-party hauliers visiting our facilities. Training is at the centre of these standards across Constellation, underpinned by defined procedures and support systems.

We report all health and safety incidents and near misses through our quality management system, allowing us to take action to mitigate future incidents and we continuously improve our safety.

In Norway, we participated in the “On the right side” programme being run by the Norwegian Truck Owners Association

The program aims to improving road safety, working environments and environmental impact in connection with the training and monitoring of drivers.

Training includes passive and fuel-saving driving practices and, according to the Norwegian Truck Owners Association (Norges Lastebileierforbund), companies affiliated to the programme experience fewer accidents, lower rates of absence due to illness and consume less fuel than non-participants.

Constellation embraces diversity and is an inclusive workplace. We aim to ensure that our colleagues feel supported and included regardless of their sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital or civil partnership status, skin colour, race, nationality, ethnic or national origins, religion or belief, age, or union status. We also aim to recruit from a diverse range of backgrounds, and apply a zero tolerance policy to discrimination.

Through encouraging applicants from diverse backgrounds, we aim to increase the representation of underrepresented groups in our workforce. An example of this is for gender diversity: currently only 15% of Constellation’s workforce is female, representative of the broader industry. We are sponsoring the Women in Cold Chain initiative to support our aim of encouraging more women into the sector.

To encourage greater gender diversity in the industry, Constellation sponsors the Women in Cold Chain initiative

Women are underrepresented in the temperature-controlled logistics sector, and this initiative aims to raise awareness of this, and encourage women to explore a career in the industry.

We support local and international initiatives, with the goal of making a positive contribution to our local communities, and to organisations relevant to our business.

Supported organisations include:

  • Unicef Logo
  • Norsk Luftambulanse
  • Gcib Logo

We also support a number of local causes including food banks, schools, nurseries, children’s hospices, business clubs, and sports teams.

Ensuring good governance

Good governance is essential for a well-operating business. The board of directors and management team have oversight of all material business activities, including ESG matters and key decisions, through board meetings and regular ESG reporting.

This begins with compliance with regulations and guiding principles governing the protection of human rights, operational and occupational health and safety, environmental, and business practices in the jurisdictions in which we operate. Our sites also voluntarily take part in several industry-relevant quality standards and accreditations, such as BRCGS and IFS. These help to validate the robust processes and procedures that are in place to ensure our services are delivered to a high standard to customers.

Sustainable Development Goals

Constellation aims to contribute positively to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the UN member states in 2015.

We identify below the key SDGs where we feel we can have the greatest impact.

Zero Hunger

  • We are helping to achieve Goal 2.1 through the provision of critical storage infrastructure to European food supply chains, enabling the supply and distribution of safe, nutritious, and sustainable frozen food globally.

Good Health and Wellbeing

  • Health and Safety is taken extremely seriously across our entire business. We employ a robust Health & Safety policy across our sites to ensure that our employees are protected to the best possible standard. Our INFORM system allows incidents (including injuries, hazards, and near misses) to be easily reported, as we continue to look for other ways to reduce the risk of re-occurrence and improve our strong safety record.
  • We are continuing to upgrade and equip our logistics fleet with the latest in safety and crash protection systems, contributing to Goal 3.6. Our participation in the Norwegian Truck Owners Association’s (Norges Lastebileierforbund) ‘On the right side’ initiative is improving road safety through the training and monitoring of drivers through telematics.

Affordable and Clean Energy

  • Investment into renewable energy generation is a key part of our wider ESG strategy, contributing to reductions in our own carbon footprint and helping to achieve Goal 7.2. Most of our sites are already fitted with solar panels. We have installed an additional 6MW of solar across our sites in 2023, bringing the total so far to 12.4MW.
  • We are continuing to look for opportunities to improve the energy efficiency of our refrigeration plant and buildings. We have conducted company-wide energy audits and have made investments across several sites, including €500k at our Val-de-Meuse site in France to upgrade our refrigeration plant, achieving a significant 40% energy saving. We have also installed more efficient LED lighting, best-in-class insulation and rapid-roll doors across multiple sites to further increase energy efficiency. All these efforts are helping to achieve Goal 7.3.

Decent Work and Economic Growth

  • We are investing into automation throughout our warehouses to supplement the work of our employees, such as the installation of fully automated vehicle unloading ramps in Mouscron, increasing their productivity and making Goal 8.2 a reality.
  • As we continue on our growth journey, we are continuing to provide a diverse range of new, high-quality employment opportunities. For example, our participation in a scheme in Lommel has helped those with disabilities to find work with us in an accommodating environment, ensuring that we embrace a diverse workforce and help to achieve Goal 8.5. We are also contributing to gender equality and encouraging more women to join the industry through our sponsorship of the ‘Women in Cold Chain’ initiative.
  • Aside from these specific goals, we are supporting the growth of local economies around our sites by using locally sourced construction where possible, recruiting staff from the local area, and sponsoring and contributing to local initiatives. One example is at our Mouscron ICE site, where we have installed a fishing lake for the local community to enjoy.

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

  • We are contributing towards Goal 9.4 by increasing the sustainability of our infrastructure. As mentioned under Goal 7, this includes investments in energy efficiency at several of our sites, training our staff on energy efficiency, investing in our transport fleet and efficiency to reduce fuel use, and pursuing BREEAM sustainable construction standards. Improvement through innovation plays an important part in our business model.

Responsible Consumption and Production

  • Waste generated is tracked at all sites, and we aim to minimise the amount of this waste going to landfill. By enabling food to be kept fresher for longer in the supply chain, contributing to the reduction of global food waste, we are helping to achieve Goal 12.3.

Climate Action

  • We have set ambitious science-aligned net zero targets. We are taking steps to reduce our energy and fuel consumption and generate our own sustainable energy and transitioning to lower emissions options where possible in our supply chain, helping to achieve Goal 13.1.
  • We are also supporting the resilience of the global food chain against extreme heat climate-related events.

Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

  • We operate a zero-tolerance attitude towards unethical conduct, with a robust set of policies and mechanisms in place. This includes an anonymous third party whistleblowing channel. Strong sustainability-related governance ensures that we remain transparent and accountable and contribute to Goal 16.5.

External Assessment of Our Performance

We participate in GRESB, a 3rd party benchmark to independently assess our ESG performance.

The GRESB benchmark assesses our performance across several ESG categories and metrics and compares us to our peers and other infrastructure companies.

In 2025, we achieved an excellent score of 96 for our 2024 performance. We are continuously seeking ways to improve our ESG performance.
