/8 May 20255 Questions to Ask Your Import and Export PartnerWhen navigating international trade, choosing the right import and export partner can make the difference between a smooth, efficient process and costly delays. Regulations vary widely across markets, and the paperwork alone can be challenging – especially in the cold chain industry, where precision and timing are everything. At Constellation Cold Logistics, we work with a wide range of customers across Europe, supporting their global ambitions with infrastructure, expertise and service designed to remove friction and reduce cost at every step of the way. We spoke to our specialist teams in Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands, to help you understand the key questions to ask when selecting your import and export logistics partner – and why they matter.Learn about Constellation’s import and export service.1. Do they operate bonded warehouses?Bonded warehouses are critical for companies looking to defer or avoid import taxes on goods that are temporarily stored before being re-exported. They offer flexibility and can significantly reduce costs, particularly for high-value goods or businesses trading across multiple borders. Our facilities in Frederikstad (Norway), Denmark, and Nijkerk (Netherlands) are all bonded, enabling customers to store goods like fish, butter and meat tax-free until they’re shipped on. In the Netherlands, we support customers who import and store goods in our bonded warehouse before re-exporting them – helping them save on import duties while ensuring full customs compliance.2. What export licenses do they hold – and to which countries? Many destination countries require specific export licenses, particularly for food products. Without the correct authorisations, shipments risk delays, fines or rejection at borders. Ensuring your partner has the right licenses, and experience navigating these requirements, is essential.Constellation holds a wide range of export licenses across our network. Our Danish warehouses are licensed to export meat and other goods to countries with complex regulatory requirements – including China, Japan, South Korea, the USA, and Brussels. Similarly, our team in Norway is fully licensed for seafood exports, including to China, supporting the country’s vital salmon trade.3. Do their facilities operate within an ISPS area?ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) areas are secure harbour zones. Having your logistics partner located inside one can eliminate the need for costly additional transportation between port gates and storage – saving both time and money. Our Frederikstad site in Norway is located within the ISPS zone at Borg Harbour. This setup offers a significant customer advantage: goods can be moved directly from ship to warehouse without additional external transport – a service that competitors often charge up to NOK 5,000 per container for.4. Do they issue health certificates – and how many?Health certificates are required for the export of food products to many international markets, and issuing them can be a complex process. Having a logistics partner who can manage this end-to-end is a huge advantage – reducing admin, minimising errors, and ensuring regulatory compliance. In Denmark alone, we issue over 20,000 health certificates per year, primarily for the meat industry. Our teams are deeply experienced in this specialist area, handling certification for pork, beef, poultry and more. In Nijkerk, we also issue around 1,500–2,000 certificates annually, supporting exports of poultry and fish.5. Do they support you with your background documentation? For many export processes, the customer is responsible for providing background documentation before certificates can be issued. A good logistics partner doesn’t just wait for this paperwork – they proactively support you to ensure accuracy and compliance, avoiding delays or rejected applications. Our Danish team, works closely with customers to validate and check background documents before submission. This hands-on support helps customers navigate complex regulations and meet local legislative requirements with confidence.Choose a partnership that delivers confidence Choosing the right partner for your import and export needs is about more than cold storage.
